Weather Tracking Program V1.0
The Weather Tracking Program is a long term class project which can be used
in conjunction with any science lessons covering the topic of weather.
This program will allow students to enter daily weather data including:
High Temperature, Low Temperature, Humidity, Wind Speed, Wind Direction,
Barometric Pressure, Rainfall, Snowfall, Mixed Precipitation. The program
will compile the data over time and present it on a summary screen which shows
all of the averages for these, the high entries, and the low entries. You can
average the data for all dates, one date, or a range of dates that you select.
The shareware program is limited in that it will track only 5 days worth of
date (the registered version will track 200 - more than a full, standard school
year.) Students can view the raw data as entered by them in a table format.
This allows them to practice their graphing skills by charting the data. They
can use the data to explore the relationships between temperature and humidity,
temperature and air pressure, humidity and air pressure, etc.
This program is ideal for classrooms which have an LC projector or TV
interface attached to a computer. This allows for whole class presentations.
The program will run from either diskette or a hard disk and is started from
the DOS prompt by entering WEATH10. You will first be shown the introductory
credit screen and, after 30 seconds, you may press any key to actually begin.
The first display you see is the calculation summary and data input screen.
Initially, you will notice a message at the bottom of the screen which states
there are 0 days in the database. This is because when you first start, the
database is empty. This number will increment after each data input session.
Also, you will see a message stating that all days have been selected. There
is a feature of this program to work with individual days, date ranges which
you specify, or all days in the database. The default is all days.
You will notice a series of boxes showing various weather factors. The boxes
show the high, low and average numbers for each factor based on the date(s)
selected. To change the date range, press F4. You will be asked the start
date and the end date for the range (e.g. 02/15/97 to 02/18/97 will use the
information for those 4 days only - 02/15, 02/16, 02/17, 02/18) You may set
the start and end date for the same day. This will result in the main screen
showing the information for just that day.
If you press F2, you will see the data, as it has been entered, in tabular
form. This is ideal for students to practice their graphing skills and to
explore how temperature, humidity, etc are inter-related.
F3 is disabled in the shareware version but would normally reset the database.
To enter data, you use the box in the lower right side of the screen. You
use the arrow keys to highlight the field to enter (e.g. the day's high
temperature) and the backspace key to correct mistakes. Once all of the
information has been entered, pressing F1 will store it for the date shown
in the data input window. NOTE: once the data has been entered, it cannot be
changed. This is to ensure that students do not get careless and do put some
thought into what they are doing before they commit the data.
Once several days of data have been entered, you should see some kind of
pattern(s) emerging (e.g. a warming trend) This is when it is advisable to
review the data tables with the class as a whole and have meaningful whole
group discussions on what it all means.
In the shareware version you are limited to 5 days of data input. Once the
fifth day has been entered, the program will no longer function.
The Registered Version
The registered version works just like the shareware except you are allowed
up to 200 days of data tracking. Also, you can reset the database to
prepare the program for another group of students. In addition, several
reproducible student sheets for data graphing, collecting, etc are included.
The registered version is $20.00. Use the SOFTCAT program to automatically
generate an order form (available from http://members.aol.com/wjimer6887) or
send a chaeck or money order to:
